Melissa Benoist And Laura Benanti Talk ‘Supergirl’

With CBS’ Supergirl series heading into development, picking up new cast members, and currently seeking its Superman, more character and story details are beginning to trickle in.

Series star Melissa Benoist (Glee) recently spoke with Comic Book Resources about the pressure and excitement she feels for the iconic role, and opened up a bit about what we can expect from her take on the Last Daughter of Krypton:

“What’s so wonderful about her is that she is such a relatable character, amongst her powers. What I’m most excited about is telling a story about a human being really realizing their potential and strength, and I think that’s something that everyone will root for and want in their own lives – I’m really excited about that.”

As far as whether or not she’d been reading any comics to prepare for the role, she said:

“It’s a little daunting. It’s daunting, but that’s good. I like being pushed. I work well under pressure… I think if you told my five-year-old self that all this would be happening in this period of time, I would not have believed you! Because it’s been really wonderful. I feel so privileged to be working and doing what I’ve always loved to do since I was four years old… I’m a little overwhelmed by it, to be honest.”

Benanti

Joining Benoist in the series is Nashville alum Laura Benanti, who plays Kara’s birth mother, Alura Zor-El. While initial details about her character (described as someone whose wisdom and guidance would “echo across space and time”) made it sound like the series would give the Kryptonian women a sort of Kal-El/Jor-El relationship, talk about the small nine year age difference between the two actresses led to some interesting details from Benanti.

While she had to remain tight-lipped, Benanti did promise that the minimal age difference will make sense on the series in a new interview with EW:

“It’s very early on, so I wouldn’t feel comfortable saying anything other than our mere nine-year age difference will make sense. On Krypton age doesn’t necessarily matter. A lot of people on Twitter were like, ‘She’s too young to be her mom!’ But it will all make sense once you see the show.”

I guess we’ll find out what Benanti means when Supergirl airs on CBS this fall. Joining Benoist and Benanti are Mehcad Brooks (True Blood) as Jimmy Olsen and Calista Flockhart (Ally McBeal) as Cat Grant.
