Over the past week, rumors began to swirl that Chris Pine was actually up for the role of Hal Jordan in Justice League, and the eventual Green Lantern reboot. Pine had been linked to the role of Steve Trevor in Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman, where he’d play the fighter pilot who discovered Diana’s Amazonian world, and become her eventual love interest. The casting made a bit of sense, with Pine having a hard time finding a hit at the box office outside of the Star Trek series, and it was looking more and more like he may become a dying star, even if he was good in the movies that weren’t performing. Having him star alongside Gadot as Wonder Woman would be a smart move for him, as well as his career, where he wouldn’t have to lead a film, but it could still do well, putting him back in the limelight, much like Into the Woods did for him.
But if the recent rumors are true, it seems the same above scenario would apply, as Tyrese Gibson, one of the stars of the Fast and the Furious franchise, has begun hinting he’ll be starring alongside Pine in the Green Lantern reboot. Gibson has been taking to his Instagram account over the past few months, posting fan art of him as John Stewart, one of the most popular characters to dawn the Lantern Ring, publicly campaigning for the role. His latest two on the matter seem to hint at big things to come, as you can see below:
The newest picture also seems to confirm, or at least encourage the hopeful fans, that he and Pine will be starring together in the new Green Lantern films.
Now, this could have been all wishful thinking, but in a recent interview with ET, Tyrese seemed a little more certain, not exactly playing coy, if he would in fact be joining the expanding DC Cinematic Universe.
“There are certain things I can’t speak on,” Tyrese said, cautiously. “But I will say, however this works out, it’s definitely the fans’ fault. I was at home minding my own business and fans start creating these fan-made videos of me as Green Lantern and I looked into it. I’ve been a fan of the Green Lantern. I took the oath, and I had a meeting at Warner Bros. and certain things were said and talked about. We’ll just see what happens.”
Tyrese was quick to follow up, making it seem pretty clear he’s still trying to campaign for the role, and things may not be settled just yet.
“Listen, these muscles are here and they’re ready to be used. There aare are lot of people, domestically and internationally, who’s got love with your boy. I’m coming into this thing with some fans and some box office receipts behind my name and I say that proudly and humbly. I just think I deserve a shot at suiting up and becoming the Green Lantern.”
Whether Tyrese has the role yet or not, it would be a smart move on WB’s part, and if the more recent rumors about the Green Lantern reboot are to be believed, Stewart, Hal Jordan, and Guy Gardener will all be starring in the film, making it more of an ensemble film than one that would rely on just one character. This could be a direct reference to the fact that Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, a film about a team of heroes in space, did so well last year, giving WB the idea this could be the best way to take the film series. Couple that with the original film’s lackluster performance, it’s easy to see why WB might want to make the new Green Lantern film an ensemble, and trying to bury the stink of the Ryan Reynolds starrer.
With Gibson coming off the box office success of Furious 7, he’s a hot ticket, and one that WB would be very smart to bring on board. While he’s not an A List star, he’s a recognizable one, and with his work on the Fast and the Furious series, he’s become popular amongst audiences. Pairing him with Pine would be an even better move, because then the movie won’t rest on either of their shoulders, but they can carry it together, pushing both of them into full stardom.
I really hope this comes to pass, because I think Gibson has what it takes to dawn the ring in this universe, and he and Pine together could make a great pairing. They’d be a great fit into an already exciting and fun universe that’s coming together, joining quite a bit of talent, and I’m curious to see how this plays out.
