A new rumor coming from Bleeding Cool is suggesting that the next Blade project from Marvel will indeed be a film, but will focus on his daughter, Fallon Grey, who will take up her father’s mantle as a vampire hunter in a new comic book series.
Bleeding Cool has previously reported that the newly to-be-relaunched Blade comic featuring the daughter of Blade, has been delayed.
I understand from well-connected sources that this is due to careful concern from up above the food chain, that the character and the comic are suddenly considered extremely important by the bean counters, and the multi-media folk.
Because the plan is that this new Blade will be the one that features in the next Blade movie.
Previous rumors have suggested that Blade is on the table for the second wave of Netflix series, but who knows with Kevin Feige recently getting more creative control over Marvel projects and going directly to Disney to get films greenlit.
Diversity has been a hot-button issue concerning upcoming and current studio superhero projects, and Fallon’s Blade could be how Marvel tackles this backlash head-on, along with Black Panther and Captain Marvel. There’s been talk that Marvel CEO Ike Perlmutter has been a roadblock for Feige to rollout these projects that fans are demanding to see, along with the more obscure ones currently in development.
There’s been some speculation that this could be that unnamed Marvel project that 12 Years A Slave‘s John Ridley was developing for them. The talk had been he was working on a project about a newer/younger female heroine, which had most of us assuming it would be the super popular Ms. Marvel comic featuring Muslim heroine Kamala Khan.
Wesley Snipes revealed at SDCC15, that he has indeed met with Marvel about Blade, having interesting conversations. Snipes taking that Whistler role, as Fallon’s vampire hunting mentor/father would be logical. We’ve already seen that relationship in Trinity, with Whistler/Abigail, even if the movie was a giant mess.
I’m slightly apprehensive about his return to the role, but if it’s more of a supporting role, I think I can get on-board with it.
More importantly, if Marvel establishes that Snipe’s Blade is apart of the MCU, this means that 1998’s Blade is indeed the first MCU movie, not Iron Man, and it’s sequels are possible MCU canon as well.
My vote goes to Zoë Kravitz, who played a mutant in X-Men: First Class, only to be killed-off in Days of Future Past. However, being apart of critical breakout films such as Dope and Mad Max: Fury Road. Her Dope director has been previously linked as speaking with Marvel Studios as well. I think she’s up-and-coming enough to take on either a film or Netflix series, depending on the actual direction of this new Blade project.
What do you think? Is this a good direction for Marvel Studios and are you excited for more Blade? Who should play Blade’s daughter Fallon?
