Marvel Studios held a fan event to reveal fifteen minutes of footage from Doctor Strange to help promote the film before it’s November release.
Kevin Feige made himself available for interviews and The Playlist was able to get him to comment on recent talk from Kate Beckinsale that Sony Screen Gems attempted an Underworld crossover with Blade.
Along with what exactly is the current status of a new Blade project.
“They did ask a long time ago and I think our answer was, ‘No, we’ll do something with ‘Blade’ at some point.’ That’s still the answer,” Feige says.
“We still think he’s a great character. He’s a really fun character. We think this movie going into a different side of the universe would have the potential to have him pop up, but between the movies, the Netflix shows, the ABC shows there are so many opportunities for the character to pop up as you’re now seeing with Ghost Rider on ‘AGENTS of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ that rather than team up with another studio on that character let’s do something on our own. What that is? Where that will be? We’ll see. There is nothing imminent to my knowledge.”
The last real solid thing we heard concerning Blade came from an article from The Hollywood Reporter in 2013, stating that Marvel’s writers program had developed a script alongside Captain Marvel.
Wesley Snipes seems completely open to the idea of doing either film or television, and he’s not the only actor interested in the role.
Idris Elba and John Boyega have mentioned a desire to takeover the Blade mantle from Snipes.
Boyega just happens to be apart of the Disney family via Star Wars and has an upcoming Netflix project with a remake of Watership Down.
Since then, there’s been chatter that Blade is coming to Netflix down the road. Once Marvel opens the door to horror I’m sure we’ll see a bunch of new series tackling those characters. We don’t expect to see Blade on the big screen with Marvel’s current PG-13 policy with their movies releases, so Netflix seems like a more suitable platform.
There are already rumblings of a Ghost Rider series in the works at Marvel TV. Blade making a cameo in a solo Ghost Rider series before his own series wouldn’t be terribly out of character, as the two were on the horror superhero team The Midnight Sons.
Other Marvel heroic horror characters that could easily join either show to build-up Midnight Sons include Jack Russell aka Werewolf By Night, Hannibal King, Morbius and others.
I feel like if we do hear anything about Blade it’ll be coming from the television side of things and that means Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb.
