The latest Scarface incarnation has lost it’s director as Variety reports that Sony has dragged Antoine Fuqua away for Equalizer 2. This has forced Fuqua to exit Scarface which reportedly has Rogue One’s Diego Luna attached to star as the lead.
Sony’s billion dollar loss in 2016 has likely lit a fire under projects that could turn a profit as the original Equalizer starring Denzel Washington landed the studio a decent profit. Making the sequel a big priority in the wake of massive losses over the last year and that scheduling issue is being named as the reason for Fuqua’s exit.
Scarface is said to focus on a Mexican immigrant’s rise to power not unlike in the films from the 1930’s and 1980’s. This time the setting will take place in L.A. and most likely within the world of the ruthless cartels.
Word is the film will take more cues from current projects like Narcos and Sicario rather than repeating the same beats from the previous incarnations like the Al Pacino film.
