Sony is a studio known for really bad ideas and their newest idea is head-scratching, to say the least. Not only is Daniel Craig‘s role getting recast (previously reported) but even Rooney Mara‘s Oscar-nominated role of Lisbeth Salander will be handed off to another actress in Fede Alvarez’s The Girl In The Spider’s Web.
Uninspiring names like American actresses Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson are said to be on the studio radar as well. Scarlett had originally been in the mix to play Salander for the first film. Variety adding that Swedish actress and recent Oscar-winner Alicia Vikander had been offered the role but has smartly passed on it.
I’m still kind of shocked that Sony is making a move like this after the role earned Mara an Oscar nomination. It seems bizarrely puzzling why the studio thinks recasting is a good idea when she was basically the most compelling aspect of the last film, as there are less unknowns with Mara returning to the role as there would be with a new actress. Just strange.
You’d think that Sony would attempt to find a Swedish actress for the role instead of another American. How about Rebecca Ferguson?
The Swedish actress was the highlight of Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, allowing for an international appeal. Also, Rebecca has worked with the studio on their tentpole film Life co-starring with Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal.
Whatever happened between producers, Sony, and everyone involved with David Fincher‘s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo has seemed to have led to this bad blood during the sequel development. It’s now to the point of the studio calling for recasting/reboot of the well-liked thriller.
David Fincher (replaced with Fede) and Sony couldn’t agree on budgets when the director had lined up The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked The Hornets Nest back-to-back with exceptionally pricey scripts penned by a returning Steve Zaillian. They’ve instead gone for the fourth book instead, leaving out material that was being set up in the last film, another mistake. The Swedish versions of those films were made for television and nobody in the U.S. even knows about them.
Alvarez, of course, is known for small budgets which likely is why he was chosen, to squeeze every dollar out of scaled-back budget compared to Fincher’s film.
To say my interest in this project has dropped by staggering amount is an understatement. Bad move Sony.
The Girl In The Spider’s Web is set for release on October 5th, 2018.
