Anthony Mackie Is The Latest Actor Campaigning To Play Marvel’s New ‘Blade’

Screen Geek spoke with Marvel actor Anthony Mackie (Triple 9, Hurt Locker, Captain America: The Winter Soldier) who states he’d love a shot a playing the new Blade.

“I pretty much want to grow up to be Wesley Snipes. If we can bring back Blade, I’d definitely be Blade in every Blade movie.”

Mackie wouldn’t be the first or last actor with the desire to play Blade. Others actors putting their hats in the ring include Idris Elba, John Boyega, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje.

We know that Marvel’s in-house writers-program developed a new Blade script around the same time as Captain Marvel but they’ve been sitting on that Blade outline for years.

Kevin Feige has briefly touched on Blade but didn’t seem ready to reveal his hand concerning what their plans are for him. But, Kevin alluded Blade could make his return on the small screen.

“We’ll do something with Blade at some point.’ That’s still the answer. We think he’s a great character, a really fun character.”

Rumors have suggested that Blade could be one of the next Marvel shows on Netflix which might be more suitable for the character as Marvel Studios has a mandate not to pursue R-rated films. Personally, I wouldn’t mind seeing the Daredevil or Punisher creative teams tackling Blade next.

Alfre Woodard playing two different characters in Captain America: Civil War and Luke Cage suggests the two universes are connected but could also allow actors playing multiple Marvel roles.

It sounded like Mackie is more interested in playing Blade in films, who knows if a Netflix series would be tempting to him. Although, if they did pursue films I wouldn’t mind seeing John Wick’s Chad Stahelski take a crack at Blade.
