Dear Sony, Use That Old ‘Venom’ Script From ‘Deadpool’ Writers and Ask For Marvel’s Help

We recently learned that Sony is yet again trying to make a Venom movie releasing in 2018. It was revealed the studio is looking to assign the uninspiring screenwriting duo of the Jumanji reboot starring Dwayne Johnson.

However, it would be nice if Sony looked back towards a script they already have. In 2008, Deadpool and Deadpool 2 screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick wrote a Venom script years ago before Gary Ross (Hunger Games) and many others took over.

Many people might be asking themselves, why didn’t Sony take another look at this script after Deadpool’s massive box office success? Well, we’re talking about Sony and they don’t think like a normal studio would these days.

While speaking with Collider, the two revealed a few details from their Venom script confirming their incarnation would have had Eddie Brock as the human host.

WERNICK: Yeah it was definitely kind of dark and soul search-y.  We love it and we’re proud of it.

REESE: Eddie Brock was a conflicted character, and so I don’t think it could’ve been Peter Parker.

WERNICK: Imagine a symbiote traveling across a city at some point in the movie, jumping from body to body as it goes, and each person that it inhabits ends up becoming really violent and striking someone else and then it jumps to the next person.  There was a really cool sequence like that in there.

REESE: We gotta use that at some point.

WERNICK: We do have to use that, except it’s pretty specific to the symbiote.

I’m hoping this also isn’t some offshoot spinoff that doesn’t take place in the Marvel cinematic universe. Spider-Man is now established there, so having Venom in there makes a lot of sense. We know Sony has major issues with their blockbusters lately and could use the extra help with Marvel helping godfather a film like this.

When it comes to casting, Sony’s golden goose Dwayne Johnson seems like the best choice if they’re going with Eddie Brock, as his character is a bulky weightlifter and Johnson is already playing anti-hero Black Adam. Although, we don’t really know when Warner Bros. will actually put Shazam! and Black Adam movies into production.

This would give Johnson a shot at technically joining the MCU after being rumored to have turned down the Drax role in Guardians of The Galaxy. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick also penned Johnson’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation.

That’s unless Sony wants to go with the more modern version of Venom with Flash Thompson, played by Tony Revolori in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Venom is set for release on October 6th, 2018. This suggests that production will begin this fall.
