I recently tweeted out that Samuel L. Jackson is linked for a return to the role of Nick Fury in Captain Marvel. I felt the need to do a little clarification because of the response to the potential news. This rumor stems from rumblings within the production community, as his name has appeared as co-starring alongside lead actress Brie Larson for upcoming crew recruitment for the film.
Omega Underground has previously learned that production will shooting between January and May in Atlanta, filming expected to start on January 8th under the working title Warbird. Sony’s Amy Pascal has suggested that Spider-Man 2 would be the next production to take place in April-May (right around the time Captain Marvel wraps), as pre-production is said to begin next month.
The expectation would be that Jackson’s role would be large enough to be mentioned for crew recruitment. This information is far from official, but things are starting to add up including Sam’s own words suggesting a couple months ago to WeGotThisCovered he could be involved with Captain Marvel.
“I’m always open and game. But they got Infinity Wars, two movies to do there, and after that there’s Brie [Larson’s] movie Captain Marvel, which maybe [Nick] will be part of. Also, I asked them, ‘So you’re doing Black Panther and the only black character in the Marvel Universe is not showing up?’ And they’re like, ‘Nick Fury is not in Wakanda!’ How can he not know the other black superhero on the planet? How the hell does that work? But they just said, ‘No you’re not in that one.'”
It was revealed that Marvel had originally wanted Fury to play a mentor role in Spider-Man: Homecoming and Jackson was a little puzzled why he wasn’t apart of the cast of Black Panther. All things considering, he hasn’t shown up since Avengers: Age of Ultron (while expect to appear in Avengers: Infinity War and the untitled Avengers 4). Making a return to a role equal to that seen in Captain America: The Winter Solider could happen, but we haven’t learned the scale of this potential role.
Some have pointed out that Jackson’s contract will likely come to an end with Avengers 4, but we know Samuel isn’t looking to retire the character anytime soon. Plenty of Marvel actors have re-upped their extensive contracts and it remains to be seen what Fury’s fate will be post-Avengers 4. Captain Marvel will be release between the two Avengers installments, which could allow a Fury return linking Carol to the greater MCU.
The relationship between Brie Larson and Jackson has been well established before they step on the Avengers set, as they worked together on Kong: Skull Island and Brie cast Sam to co-star in her directorial debut Unicorn Store which is currently in post. So, they’ve worked on two different films making this pairing believable.
Fury and Carol Danvers are both military characters, another aspect is that Nick has mentored other heroes throughout the previous movies and without superpowers wouldn’t overshadow Carol’s solo debut.
Captain Marvel will be released a few months ahead of Avengers 4 on March 8th, 2019.
