‘Triple Frontier’ Shoots August-October In Hawaii; Will The Afflecks and Mahershala Ali Star?

A production source has revealed to Omega Underground that Triple Frontier with the working title of Two Mules will be shooting from August 7th until October 27th in undisclosed locations in the state of Hawaii. The locale will be doubling for the notoriously dangerous area in South America being portrayed in the film.

The drug cartel thriller is set in the notorious border zone with Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil, where the Iguazu and Parana rivers converge.

Originally, the project had been developed by Oscar-winning director Katheryn Bigelow (Hurt Locker, Zero Dark Thirty) and penned by screenwriter Mark Boal with names such as Tom Hanks, Will Smith, and Johnny Depp said to be in the mix for roles.

The project was then resurrected after Bigelow’s exit to focus on Detriot, and The Most Violent Year’s J.C. Chandor took over. Chandor had been talking with the likes of Channing Tatum and Tom Hardy to star in the film. Paramount ultimately decided to pull the plug at the last minute and it was shopped to other suitors.

It’s been reported by Deadline that the project had been given new life with Ben Affleck and recent Oscar-winner brother Casey Affleck eyed to star at Netflix with Chandor still attached.

Fellow Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali (Moonlight) had been linked as well but if he makes a deal with HBO for their third season of True Detective as reported by the TrackingBoard his involvement could be less likely. Although, Jeff states that the third season hasn’t been given the green light and the deal hasn’t closed. This means that it’s possible Mahershala could do both if his schedule works out.

The quick production schedule shouldn’t be an issue for Ben, as The Batman isn’t expected to begin rolling until sometime in 2018 and his Accountant sequel was only just announced by Warner Bros.

Deadline added that film had originally been eyeing a production start later in the year which lines up with our recent dates placing production taking place this fall. If this information is correct as we believe it is, a deal has likely been made with Chandor and Netflix.

Currently, the project is without a release date and it was suggested that Netflix could end up picking up the film from Paramount. Our expectation would be a fall 2018 release which would be right in the thick of awards release season.
