Kennedy Informally Offers Taika Waititi A ‘Star Wars’ Gig – How About ‘Fett’?

Thor: Ragnarok will surpass Wonder Woman at the global box office this week inching closer towards the potential record of being the highest grossing comic book film of 2017. A massive feat for director Taiki Waititi, as the previous two Thor films weren’t massive hits with critics or audiences.

With his newfound success, the comedic actor/director has joked with fans about the possibility of tackling Star Wars suggesting he’d get fired immediately.

Although, he eventually clarified via Uproxx.

“Look, I’m not an idiot. Who would actually say no to Star Wars?”

“Of course, I didn’t send that idea very seriously, it’s more that in light of all the things that were happening over the last couple of months, it would make me a little nervous.”

Well, it looks like his success has placed himself on Lucasfilm‘s radar as Kathleen Kennedy suggested to New Zealand outlet Newshub that she’d love to have Taika direct a Star Wars film.

“I would love for him to direct a Star Wars movie,” she said.

“I think he has exactly the right sensibility. It was very exciting to see him step into the Marvel universe and do such an amazing job with Thor.”

You can watch Kathy’s reaction to the suggestion below.

This sounds like an informal offer but since Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm have shared actors, it might be only a matter of time before they shared directors.

The perfect Star Wars project has to be Josh Trank’s former Boba Fett movie, which Omega Underground reported last December was back in development at Lucasfilm. This renewed attention to the Fett movie was later confirmed by trades when Lucasfilm was eyeing a potential Kenobi film director.

It’s a project that many fans are skeptical and would likely need a creative mind like Taika to help world build that mercenary/bounty hunter corner of the universe. He could also develop a way to give Fett and his cohorts a personality, Fett has become more of a cool looking character rather than being compelling and could be just as big of a challenge as Thor: Ragnarok was.

While it was rumored Trank and Kennedy were eyeing Tom Hardy for Fett, we know in the prequels that Boba was the clone of Jango Fett and both were played by Maori actors. Waititi being Maori himself could mean he could find the right talent for the role and possibly discover new talent like he did with Julian Dennison for The Hunter For The Wilderpeople. Keeping Fett Maori in the process which would be a huge achievement in the franchise as most Star Wars leads are white.

It could be amazing to see a Maori character on this large of a stage and Waititi could be the perfect filmmaker to make it happen. Along with Waititi incorporating Maori culture (respectfully) into the Mandalorian lore could be interesting as well.

Should Taika join the Star Wars family? If so, what should he tackle?
