Yesterday, Omega Underground picked up on production information about an unknown Star Wars anthology film that would be using the working title of Tin Can. Our theory was it could be Boba Fett, as Simon Kinberg and Lawrence Kasdan were listed as producers. The two had been previously linked to Josh Trank’s Fett incarnation.
THR reiterated our Boba Fett development rumor from last December in August that Lucasfilm is still developing Boba Fett as one of their anthologies, and now we have some solid proof of this moving forward behind the scenes.
We’ve now confirmed with a couple of production listings and an independent source with knowledge of the working title that indeed Tin Can is being used during Boba Fett’s development.
You can clearly see Tin Can is the Star Wars project that Josh Trank was set to direct, revealed by EW was their Boba Fett bounty hunter film. Kinberg and Kasdan were said to be writing the film which would likely mean even with Trank’s exit they’d stay on to finish it.
The second listing is using the faux production company name Stannum 50 Labs, which is a nod to tin (call back to Tin Can) and its atomic weight. It also doesn’t seem to have a director as it’s listed “ODA”. You can also see the transition between the use of “Anthology” and “Story” in the titles, suggesting the passage of time between the two incarnations.
Working tiles are nothing new in Star Wars here just a couple of ones currently being used or have been used in the past.
FORCE AWAKENS = FOODLES
ROGUE ONE = LOS ALAMOS
THE LAST JEDI = SPACE BEARS
SOLO = RED CUP
KENOBI = JOSHUA TREE
After Trank’s departure, Kinberg returned his focus to the X-Men franchise during Han Solo’s development and production, making his directorial debut with X-Men: Days of Future Past over the summer in Montreal.
We also reported yesterday the studio is eyeing the Kenobi movie for a January 2019 production start for a possible 2020 release, this would suggest that Fett is unlikely coming before Kenobi.
Then again, the Lucasfilm could begin upping releases to two a year. They’ll first attempt this in 2020 with Indiana Jones 5 in July and an untitled Star Wars film (Kenobi?) as suggested by Disney’s Bob Iger.
Here’s our own spin on what needs to happen.
Fandom seems to be mixed on this Fett project, I’d assume they’d really have to make a compelling pitch to fans. Not only that but would have to hire a director familiar to audiences and would be excited about their attachment.
Kathleen Kennedy has already made an informal offer to Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi to direct a Star Wars film via New Zealand’s Newshub.
Taika could be just enough of a push to get the fans and film nerds jazzed about the Fett’s prospects. Considering the creative energy he brought to the Thor franchise, the hero being considered the less interesting of the Marvel leads cinematically could be seen to parallel Boba, a lot.
The film seems to be in very early stages and we really have no idea where it could be going tone-wise or even what type of directors they’ll actually want for it. We just think Taika could be the person to bring the right type of creativity and life to a character most aren’t enthused to see an entire movie dedicated to.
