Rian Johnson Isn’t Ruling Out Old Republic Timeline For His New ‘Star Wars’ Trilogy

You might remember that Mashable took some quotes from The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson and then proclaimed that the Old Republic wasn’t going to be the focus on his new Star Wars trilogy. When in fact, all he said was that the established Old Republic video games wouldn’t be source material for what he was working on.

I mean, did anyone seriously think Rian would be adapting video game stories that were never meant to be used for movies?

The Old Republic (set a thousand years in the past) has been an established part of the universe decades before the video games came around, so it was a little funny to us that Mashable felt it was a definitive answer from Rian.

Setting these new films in the Old Republic actually hasn’t been officially ruled out, as Rian has now stated to THR that he actually hasn’t even chosen a timeline in the Star Wars universe to set these movies. Giving the Old Republic a window of opportunity.

Johnson stated they’re unconcerned where it’s set in the timeline but have made the seeds of the characters and story the primary focus. Basically, the impression given here is that they haven’t actually decided when this will be set.

“I’m at the very beginning of trying to come up with it, and honestly, timeline-wise, I’m not sure yet. In a way it’s interesting, but in a way, it’s the least interesting part of it to me. I’m more thinking of what’s the story going to be, who is it going to follow? What elements is it going to have? What kind of drama is in it? My head right now is more in that place. I haven’t really, really gotten into it. Right now I’m mostly excited by the potential and just starting to form little clusters of ideas of what it might become.”

After watching The Last Jedi, I’m all for whatever Rian wants even if my heart desires some epic Jedi and Sith armies fighting it out across the galaxy on various alien battlefields. Taking cues from things like Ran/King Lear. This would also change things up as it wouldn’t be disposable clones vs robots or Empire/New Order vs Rebels/Resistance. It would finally be Sith vs Jedi, something we have actually never truly had on screen.
