Comic-Con isn’t over and Marvel news is still rolling-in. Now, there’s an interesting quote coming from Avengers director Joss Whedon about a potential return to the Marvel cinematic universe.
While speaking with IGN, Joss revealed his desire to pursue a Black Widow solo film with Scarlett Johansson.
“Well, if someone pointed to me and said ‘do you want to make a Black Widow movie?’, the answer would be, duh.”
“I think that character really is very interesting and very earthbound, so it’s the kind of action that I got to do less of with somebody like Thor or The Vision. When you get into your ‘Superman’ territory it’s harder to maintain the gritty action that the Russo brothers do so brilliantly and she’s got that kind of thing and [you can] really do a spy thriller. Like really do a good, paranoid, ‘John le Carré on crack’ sort of thing. That would be really fun.”
“Scarlett Johansson is just delightful. She works really hard but she just spends most of her time cracking me up, so it would be a fun shoot.”
We were a bit shocked during the Marvel panel yesterday that Kevin Fiege didn’t announce plans to make the solo film, after previous comments giving the impression it was indeed a priority and three untitled projects being announced for release in 2020.
Scarlett Johnasson was recently named the most profitable actress, so it’s hard to imagine it’s gamble to have her lead her own film.
The Russo Brothers along with Winter Soldier/Civil War/Infinity War screenwriters Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus all stating they’d love take on the solo film. Fans have also demanded the solo project, which had previously led to Marvel green lighting Black Panther and Captain Marvel, due to the overwhelming interest from fans.
Our personal choice would be to see McFeely and Markus write the film, but have John Wick directors Chad Stahelski and David Leitch make the film. While Chad was busy on John Wick 2, David directed the Cold-War spy action flick The Coldest City with Charlize Theron. A Black Widow movie would be in their wheelhouse, and give us exciting action sequences.
The pair also recently did work on Captain America: Civil War, so they’re not strangers to Kevin Fiege. The Marvel head was also spotted at the premiere of John Wick and it led to rumblings the pair were meeting with Marvel about future projects.
