Claire Foy Reportedly Frontrunner To Replace Rooney Mara In ‘The Girl In The Spider’s Web’

We’ve been disappointed on every front when it comes to Sony’s Girl With The Dragon Tattoo sequel The Girl In The Spider’s Web. First, they ditched the two scripts developed by David Fincher and Steve Zillian based on the direct follow up novels by the original author. Then, they removed both Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara from the cast.

Finally, they moved towards the fourth book written by a new author that took over after the original author passed away.

They’re now distancing themselves from previously linked actresses like Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman, to somewhat of an unknown actress. As Variety reports the studio is very interested in landing The Crown actress Claire Foy for the role of hacker investigator Lisbeth Salander.

Sources tell Variety that “The Crown” star Claire Foy is the top choice to play the rogue hacker in “The Girl in the Spider’s Web,” the latest installment in the “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” series. No offer has been delivered but one is expected soon.

No offer has been made, so it’s possible they could look elsewhere.

However, I’ve been hearing the biggest sticking point the studio has is that they don’t want to spend any money on talent and want to keep production costs low. This was a major factor why everyone involved with the first film was pushed out, even after the expense of those rather pricey scripts they’ve ditched. Along with why low-budget horror director Fede Alvarez replaced Fincher.

The film has a release date of October 19th, 2018.
