HBO Officially Orders Pilot For Damon Lindelof’s ‘Watchmen’ Series

For months we’ve been hearing that Damon Lindelof‘s Watchmen series would land at HBO, giving creators the budget and freedom to make this series right.

Well, TVLine has confirmed that the series will go to pilot there, with backup scripts said to be ready to go. The assumption being that if they like the pilot they’ll have scripts in place to move forward with a full series order, usually HBO orders ten episodes.

Ending months of speculation, the premium cabler has officially placed a pilot order for Watchmen, the long-gestating TV adaptation of the DC Comics property, with Lindelof on board to write and EP. Additionally, an HBO rep also confirms to TVLine that it has ordered: “backup scripts.”

It’s a move towards DC Entertainment creating high-end television series, not unlike what Marvel Television has done with their Netflix and FX deals. Damon already has an established relationship with HBO via the series The Leftovers, so there is a good chance we’ll be getting a series order.

The Zack Snyder film was a direct adaptation of the graphic novel, but I think it’s easy to assume Damon will try to write new stories within that universe. Mostly because it would be painfully dull just to rehash things we’ve already seen in the film. Mainly, I’d hope to see the detective pairings of Nite Owl and Rorschach on missions.
