Nintendo and Illumination Developing a ‘Super Mario Bros’ Animated Film

Today, The Wall Street Journal revealed that Nintendo has struck a deal with the animated company Illumination to develop a Super Mario Bros animated feature film. Which follows the story of Mario and Luigi as they battle evil turtles and their leader Bowser. Illumination Entertainment has been behind such hits as Despicable Me,  Sing, The Secret Life of Pets and next years Dr Seuss’ The Grinch.

The plumbing duo is one the most profitable video game characters in history and has always been tempting to Hollywood to make into a film. But after the critically destroyed 1993 live-action starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo studios have been afraid to touch this classic story. But with Nintendo launching Super Mario Odessy several weeks ago on the Nintendo Switch; it’s finally time for a film.

Back in 2013 four short films was released that made Mario & Luigi into a gritty reboot that everyone wants these days:
