Micro coil manufacturing and its usage in medical sensors

Many of us have seen the movie, ‘Fantastic Voyage’, where a whole submarine crew was minimized to atomic size and then injected into the body of a vital scientist in order to conduct a brain operation to save the scientist’s life.

Well, today’s medical science has crossed a long way and the idea of the above-mentioned science fiction has been transformed into reality.

Thanks to medical sensors!

So, in this discussion, we will shed light on the functions of medicals sensors, its benefits, and the manufacturing requirements for medical coils in preparing medical sensors.

The process of winding coils:

While winding coils, keep this in mind that no wire overlaps on each other but come close to each other. This is solely because of the electromagnetic and inductive impacts which can potentially smash up the wounds. And as a result, it can damage the whole sensor. While winding, you also need to make sure that the width of the coils stay below 0.8 mm.

Manufacturing:

Manufacturing of a micro coil medical device is not an easy task at all, and for that reason, very few manufacturers make it worldwide.

With time, demands for micro medical sensors are increasing, more and more designers and organizations are getting interested in making miniature medical sensors. To make micro medical sensors, a manufacturer must know the process of preparing micro coils through insulating super tiny wires. Connecting ultra fine wires cannot be done by normal heat based soldering technology because it leads to many complications.

So, manufacturers use thermo pressure bonding technology through which you can connect super tiny wires of similar diameter or even 12 times thick wires. Before manufacturing micro coils, manufacturers need to make sure that all client specifications are being properly followed.  The entire progression of manufacture is strictly supervised and goes through a strong array of quality verifications to ensure a high standard.

Adding to this, the devices that make standard coils are not suitable for making micro coils.

Micro coil manufacturing needs special equipment which is not available outside.

So, before making micro coils, a manufacturer needs to design and build the devices first that would manufacture the coils. With it, the manufacturing facility needs to be ISO 13485 affiliated and open for timely client verification.

The manufacturers also need to maintain material traceability so that when necessary, they can trace back all information and know who made it, where it was made, etc.

Application:

Micro coils play a crucial role in cryotherapy, alternatively known as cryo cancer treatment. Cryotherapy or cryosurgery is a treatment method through which doctors eliminate cancer cells using extremely low temperature. And micro coils act here as a heater to control the rapid change in temperature.

It also helps in proper positioning of catheters and stents within body. Moreover, the small size helps them deliver drugs and medicines to the precise portion of the body.
